William Turner – Biografia
Turner nacque a Londra, a Maiden Lane nel Covent Garden nel 1775. Suo padre, William Gayone Turner (27 gennaio 1738 – 7 agosto 1829), era un barbiere e fabbricante di parrucche. La madre, Mary Marshall, con il passar del tempo diede sempre più evidenti segni di squilibrio mentale, forse in parte aggravato dalla morte precoce della sorella minore di Turner, Helen, avvenuta nel1786. Morì nel 1804, dopo essere stata ricoverata in un manicomio a partire dal 1799.
Forse a causa dei problemi che questa situazione causava in famiglia, nel 1785 il giovane Turner venne mandato ad abitare dallo zio materno a Brentford, che all’epoca era una piccola cittadina ad ovest di Londra affacciata sulla riva del Tamigi. Fu lì che mostrò per la prima volta il suo interesse per la pittura. L’anno seguente andò a frequentare una scuola a Margate, un paese sulla costa nord-orientale del Kent. In quel periodo aveva già realizzato diversi disegni, che il padre aveva esposto nella vetrina del suo negozio.
Nel 1789 entrò alla Royal Academy of Arts, a soli quattordici anni di età e l’anno seguente fu ammesso all’Accademia. Sir Joshua Reynolds, che all’epoca era il presidente della Royal Academy , guidava la commissione che decise di ammetterlo. Nei primi tempi Turner mostrò un vivo interesse per l’architettura, ma l’architetto Thomas Hardwick gli consigliò di continuare a dedicarsi invece alla pittura. Si dedicò in particolare allo studio del paesaggio classico di Claude Lorrain e Nicolas Poussin, tenendo però l’attenzione anche sullo stile dell’epoca, in cui si tendeva a trasfigurare il dato reale in una visione più lirica e personale. Dopo un solo anno di studi, un suo acquerello fu scelto per l’esposizione estiva dell’Accademia. Nel 1796 espose il suo primo lavoro ad olio, Fishermen at Sea e da quel momento espose le proprie opere all’Accademia ogni anno per tutto il resto della sua vita. Del 1797 circa è La fornace da calce a Coalbrookdale , ora conservato allo Yale Center for British Art di New Haven, in cui immerge la fabbrica in un’atmosfera vagamente demoniaca, resa tale dai violenti contrasti di luce, che trasformano l’industria in un luogo che sprigiona un fascino inquietante. Da ragazzo strinse amicizia con l’acquarellista Thomas Girtin e ne pianse la prematura morte, dichiarandolo assai più capace di lui.
Turner viaggiò a lungo in Europa, visitando nel 1802 la Francia, dove studiò le opere esposte al Museo del Louvre di Parigi, e la Svizzera dove eseguì i primi paesaggi alpini. Visitò varie volte anche Venezia.
Un importante aiuto per il suo lavoro gli venne da Walter Fawkes, di Farnley Hall nei pressi di Otley nello Yorkshire, che diventò un suo intimo amico. Turner si era recato ad Otley una prima volta nel 1797, all’età di 22 anni, quando gli era stata affidata la realizzazione di alcuni acquerelli che ritraessero il paesaggio locale. Otley e i suoi dintorni gli piacquero a tal punto da volerci ritornare molte altre volte prima di morire. Si pensa che il tempestoso sfondo di Bufera di neve: Annibale e il suo esercito attraversano le Alpi sia stato ispirato da una tempesta abbattutasi sui rilievi chiamati Le Chevin mentre l’artista si trovava a Farnley Hall.
Turner fu spesso ospite di George O’Brien Wyndham, terzo Conte di Egremont, a Petworth House nel West Sussex e lì dipinse scene tratte dai campi attorno alla residenza e della campagna del Sussex, tra cui una veduta del canale di Chichester, la cui realizzazione era stata promossa da Wyndham. Petworth House è presente in un buon numero dei suoi dipinti.
Con il passar del tempo Turner diventò via via più eccentrico. Aveva pochissimi amici e la persona che frequentava di più era suo padre, che visse con lui per trent’anni, aiutandolo anche nel suo studio come assistente. La morte del padre, nel 1829, fu per lui un colpo durissimo e come conseguenza finì anche per soffrire di periodi di depressione. Non si sposò mai, anche se mise al mondo due figlie con Sarah Danby, una nel 1801 e l’altra nel 1811.
Morì in casa della sua amante Sophia Caroline Booth in Cheyne Walk, nella zona londinese di Chelsea, il 19 dicembre 1851. Per sua volontà fu sepolto nella Cattedrale di Saint Paul, dove tuttora riposa accanto a Sir Joshua Reynolds. La sua ultima esposizione alla Royal Academy era avvenuta nell’anno precedente.
L’architetto Philip Hardwick, amico di Turner e figlio del suo insegnante, Thomas Hardwick, si occupò di organizzare i funerali e, per avvisarli, scrisse a tutti coloro che lo conoscevano “I must inform you, we have lost him ” (It. “Devo comunicarvi che l’abbiamo perso “).
